January 31, 2009

On January 29, 2009, at around 6:00 PM (PST), Josh, with the account “rightwing,” emerged once again on the DDC forums.

He and many others (primarily askbob) battled it out on the threads “Info Tyme!,” “Stop Vote Bombing Me,” “The Reinstating of the CLEANERS,” “Semantics,” “Cleaners Reborn,” “I formally ask to be elected…,” “Have your debate cleaned here:,” and “Banishment.” Josh stated repeatedly that his bombing raid would stop once all the cleaners renounced their memberships. Others, such as PoeJoe and JBlake, responded by saying that The Cleaners was not a formal group — as they do not coordinate together — but rather, they were merely an ideological group whose sole purpose was to read debates, vote, and leave RFDs.

Other opinions were thrown about as well. burningpuppies101 asked to be “formally elected” the leader of the cleaners in an attempt to formally destroy the group. He wrote in a PM, “If I become the leader, I can disband the Cleaners. Josh’s only motive for being here is that he still thinks we vote as a bloc. So if there is no bloc, there should be no reason for Josh. Then perhaps we can get somewhere.”

Logical-Master made the point that Josh would never stop, that he was only bombing to improve his ego. He stated, “I don’t know if this has been mentioned above, but I’ve called josh out on his so-called motives before. At one minute minute, his only purpose here is to stop semantics against new debaters. At another, it is to do that and combat the evil cleaners. At even another, it is just to get the cleaners (who he claimed to have been inactive hence ‘defeated’) to publicly renounce their actions. Does this sound like someone with a solid (or even somewhat rational) motivation to you?”

askbob wanted everybody to just ignore Josh in the hopes that he would get bored and go way. He posted everywhere the message, “PLEASE REFER TO THE BANISHMENT THREAD.” His attempt, however, has received very negative feedback.

Josh’s reappearance even caused a formal debate to be instigated. With KRFournier as PRO and JBlake as CON, the debate was entitled “Debate.com voter data should be publicly available.” Fournier argued, “By exposing votes and voters alike, accountability can be added to the site. This will assist in identifying abusers of the voting system as well as encourage members to vote more honestly,” while Blake noted “Instituting a system whereas all votes are public knowledge would be utterly ineffective when the voter does not care if his ‘vote bomb’ is public knowledge; of if is a ’suicide vote bombing’ account. The proposed reform would useless if a regular moderator(s) was not hired to monitor new votes or to investigate claims of voter abuse.” JBlake suggested, further, that the vote bomb removal program would be much more effective. As of this writing, KRFournier is winning by ten points.

In a debate titled “I have a suspicion that this debate will be vote bombed,” PoeJoe noted “It’s ironic. For every Josh vote Fournier gets, more legitimate are prompted to go to LM, which only makes Josh have to vote Fournier further, which only gives more legitimate votes to LM, and so on. . . . It’s recursive!” At the time of his writing, the score was 33-33. At the time of this writing, it is 42-42.

In the previously mentioned thread, “Have your debate cleaned here (a thread askbob opened for others to post their debates to be cleaned by The Cleaners),” Josh wrote, “I hope all know that by posting a debate here will attract the attention of EVERYBODY that can view this website.” By this, of course, he meant that he would give about one hundred points to the opponents of every debater that posted a debate in that thread.

Josh’s account, rightwing, has since been closed by the moderators.

December 31, 2008

As many of you may already know, on 12/29/2008, 6:00 PM (pacific time), our resident user PoeJoe was messaged by Philip Ferreira (the owner of debate.com) and was ordered to cease and desist his “debatedotcom.com” website based on the grounds that it “infringes on WebCorp, LLC’s trademarked name ‘DEBATE.COM’ ” and that PoeJoe was “using WebCorp, LLC’s intellectual property to make money via the ads on your website.” Both of these actions were claimed to be “in clear violation of US laws.”

After some brief discussion and debate, PoeJoe eventually agreed with Mr. Ferreira’s cease and desist letter, though this still remains controversial amongst debate.com users. Although most have agreed that Mr. Ferreira was correct on the matter of PoeJoe being in the wrong for collecting revenue on his website, most have agreed that the “domain name” complain simply didn’t fly.

To quote PoeJoe’s own words on this matter, “Duco even said in our private chat, ‘Debate.com’ is not a registered trademark. But even if it were registered, I’d urge my opponent to look at the following sites:

- debatef.com
- justfuckinggoogleit.com/
- www.googleguide.com/
- googlesightseeing.com/
- www.thechurchofgoogle.org/
- etc.”

In addition, the user known as askbob had even presented a copy of the US laws concerning copyright to demonstrate that PoeJoe’s actions were completely legal, as shown in the following thread: THREAD

The users known as JBlake and askbob both seemed to believe that the actions of Phil were nothing more than intimidation/bullying as can be seen in the above linked thread.

“Why didn’t he just mention it to you first, instead of starting out with intimidation and bullying?” - JBlake

“Phil can’t do anything PoeJoe. Don’t let webcorp intimidate. I mean seriously, does he really have the sparetime or the money to sue a minor? lawlz no.” - askbob

In response, PoeJoe claimed that he believed this action to be the doing of Phil’s lawyer, as pointed out in the comment below:

“I think it was the doing of his lawyer. He wrote, ‘I understand there were no bad intentions on either side so I’m not trying to be a jerk. Please don’t take it as such. I am however, forced to follow protocol established by our attorney.’ ” - PoeJoe

In related news, the relatively new debate.com regular known as “crackofdawn” has apparently had his account revoked. In response to his banning, he decided to use his sister’s account, create a thread and request to know why he was banned. No comment has yet been made by the moderator of debate.com (Mr. Ferreira), however users suspect that it was the following comment made in PoeJoe’s “website name suggestion thread” which resulted in his banning.

or
www.whilesueingthiswebsiteipromisetowearapinkbunnysuit.com
or (my favorite)
or
www.crackofdawnrulesandshouldbegivenanythinghewants.com

To really stick it to him you should try…
philsuedmeintodoingthis.com
and make it a really bad website
or
debateperiodcom.com. . .”

Crackofdawn has recently apologized for making this comment after learning of the possibility that it could have triggered his banning, but whether or not his apology shall help him reclaim his account has yet to be seen.

To quote a statement which the moderator (Mr. Ferreira) made in the Website Announcements thread:

If anyone else wants to create topics, for the express purpose of irritating and/or testing the moderators, especially after we’ve already removed your topic once, then you will most likely be kicked off the site and blocked from future activity. Members do not have the right to abuse Debate.com. Per our Terms of Use:

WebCorp reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, delete, or otherwise change a Member’s user name, URL address, content, or account with or without notice, at any time, and without liability.

This would apparently apply to debate.com comments as well . . .

(Originally posted on December 27, 2008.)

(For those not in the know, “Mafia” is a forum game that, in its most rudimentary form, has two phases and two types of players. The two phases are the “Day Phase” and “Night Phase”. During the night phase, the Mafia decides collectively which townsman to kill. During the day phase, everybody discusses who to “lynch”. The goal of the Mafia is to kill all the Townsmen, while the goal of the Townmen is to lynch all the Mafia. Discussion, suspicion, and evidence are vital aspects of the game.)

When the first Mafia game was completed (1, 2, 3), Logical-Master, the game’s host, created a sign-up thread for the second mafia game entitled, MAFIA #2: Sign Up thread. Sign-ups are officially completed, and the game has commenced on this thread.

This second game is slightly different from the first. Logical Master explains, “Unlike previously, each player shall be assigned an actual role (most players shall have abilities that can be used during the night; the MAFIA will not be the only ones to have control over the night phase).”

This second game will also include more players. Whereas the first game was composed of nine players, this new game is composed of fourteen.

The game has met some light opposition. PoeJoe writes, “I advocate that this forum follow the rules of most other forums, and most other forums do not allow forum games.” However, he later concedes his point as irrelevant, continuing, “But I do realize I am in the extreme minority on this issue. And I also realize that when I say all this, people get irrationally angry at me, so I’ll just take my leave now.”

The returning players are askbob, ournamestoolong, manutdredseal46, JBlake, TheSkeptic, Harlan, InquireTruth, Johnicle, I-am-a-Panda, and burningpuppies101. The new players to this game are DiablosChaosBroke, iamdragon, The-Mad-Hatter, and theLwerd. brian_eggleston is the only player from the first game, not playing in this second game. Eggleston explains, “Because I am often away at the weekends, and because of the time difference, I keep everybody waiting, which is not fair!” The “time difference” refers to the fact that Eggleston lives in the Britain, while most Debate.com members are from the United States.

We at DebateDotCom.com wish Logical-Master, and all the players, the best of luck!
